A Spiritual Journey

Vincent van Gogh’s art reflected his life: eccentric, genius, occasionally frantic, and profoundly deep. He became known for his thick, bold brushstrokes, with his works often bursting with colour. Vincent’s spiritual journey also matched his art. He was single-minded, fervent, and unconventional. His desire to join the clergy led Vincent to preach, conduct Bible studies, and minister to the families of struggling coal miners in Belgium. He wrote, ‘Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel.’ Ultimately, Vincent van Gogh chose to let his pictures do the preaching, as he offered fresh insights into the stories and themes of the Bible.

Presentation 1

Vincent’s Dutch brain was ‘afire with the Bible’ according to Paul Gauguin, a friend and fellow artist. Van Gogh wrote that the Bible was essential and the most beautiful book he had ever known. Why was the Bible significant to this great artist? What impact did the story of Jesus have on his art and life? As we journey with Vincent through his spiritual travels, we will unveil the lessons he may wish us to glean from his adventures.

Starry Night

After painting his Starry Night over the Rhône, Vincent van Gogh wrote that there were moments when he had a ‘terrible need of—shall I say the word—religion? Then I go out at night and paint the stars.’ Why did the vast expanse of the heavens inspire Van Gogh? What can nature teach us about God? And how do we join Vincent in an encounter with our Creator?

Sunflowers

Presentation 3

Vincent van Gogh became captivated by sunflowers, asserting, ‘The sunflower is mine’. Eleven of his paintings showcased this bright and beautiful flower as he envisioned filling his room and studio with ‘nothing but large sunflowers’. Why was the sunflower so significant to Vincent, and what insights can this provide for our hectic, troubled lives today?

The Presenter

Neale Schofield is a Christian pastor and historian with a special interest in the visual arts, particularly in the work of Van Gogh. Having earned his Ph.D. from the School of History at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, he currently serves as a consultant at the university. Previously, Neale completed a Master’s degree in Christianity and the Arts at King’s College London in collaboration with The National Gallery, London. Neale has been featured in the Masterstroke television series on several local and international broadcasts.
