The Treasure in the Dirt: What Are You Really Worth?

What if the greatest treasure in the world was buried in the most unlikely place—your own life?

James Tissot’s painting The Hidden Treasure brings to life one of Jesus’ shortest, yet most profound, parables. Found in Matthew 13:44, the verse reads:

“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it, he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”

The scene is easy to imagine. A man is out plowing a field, perhaps hired for the day, when his plow strikes something unexpected. He digs into the earth and uncovers a wooden chest—inside, untold riches: jewels, silver, gold. In a flash, his world changes. He carefully buries the box again, heart racing, and runs off to sell everything he owns so he can buy that seemingly worthless field. Because he knows the truth: whoever owns the land, owns the treasure.

Tissot captures the moment with vivid intensity. The man lies stretched out over the ground, hurriedly covering the treasure before anyone else can find it. There’s tension in his body, but joy on his face. He understands what no one else does—this field, this dusty patch of earth, is now the key to a new life. Yes, it will cost him everything. But it’s worth it.

This simple parable speaks volumes.

First, Jesus is clear: the Kingdom of Heaven is of infinite value—but it requires everything. Gaining it demands full surrender. Nothing can be held back. Like the man in the field, you must be willing to let go of your old securities to gain something far greater.

But there’s a deeper twist, often overlooked.

This parable isn’t just about how we find God. It’s also a picture of how God sees us. Jesus, the man in the story, gave up everything—His glory, His comfort, even His own life—to purchase a broken, forgotten world. Why? Because hidden in that dirt was treasure. And that treasure… is you.

The Bible says:

“You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession.” — 1 Peter 2:9

Tissot’s painting, like the parable itself, reveals a radical truth:

To God, you are worth everything.

So, what are you really worth? According to Jesus—absolutely everything.
